The root-to-tree project is based on the New reading skills development program. The new reading skills development program is part of the Right to Learn development program of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The New Reading Skills program is managed by the Board of Education and the National Audiovisual Institute. The aim of the program is to increase children's and young people's media literacy, digital skills and programming skills. These are skills that children need in their everyday lives now and in the future. Descriptions of competence have been drawn up for these competence areas to support the staff's work. At the same time, they promote equal education in Finland.

The goal of the Root to Tree project is to bring activities in accordance with the New Reading Skills development program into everyday life in early childhood education. At the same time, the skills of the staff and children are increased and small equipment purchases are made.

The main focus of the project is on children under 3 years old. In addition, the goal is to take into account the characteristics of family daycare and especially to build a pedagogy specific to this mode of operation.
