The operation of Riihimäki general upper secondary school began in 1905. Four years later, the name of the school changed to Riihimäki co-educational school.

In 1911, Riihimäki co-educational school received upper secondary school rights. From the fall semester of 1931, it became the state-owned Riihimäki co-ed high school, and in 1944, a boys-only high school, and again in 1971, a co-ed high school. In 1976, the school became Riihimäki general upper secondary school owned by the city of Riihimäki.

The adult upper secondary school will cease operations in 2022.
