The aim of the Finnish model of hobby is to support the well-being of children and young people by enabling every child and young person to have a pleasant and free hobby during the school day. The target group of the hobbies are students in grades 1–9 of basic education. pupils. The hobby offer is formed according to the wishes of the students and the available instructors. During the school year, every school has an activity after the school day. There are many different hobby groups to choose from, from cooking to art, digital gaming and exercise. There may be changes to the groups during the school year.
The city of Riihimäki has received further funding for the Finnish model of recreation project for the academic year 2024–2025. The operation started in the academic year 2021–2022.
The Ministry of Education and Culture grants municipalities an annual grant to implement the model. The model is used in more than 90% of municipalities in mainland Finland.
