Alien species are species that have spread from their natural range to new areas with humans. Among the invasive alien species, especially Spanish sirenians and giant balsam occur in Riihimäki. The city of Riihimäki repels from its own lands, among other things, giant pipes, giant balsams, handsome lupines and Spanish sirens. Non-native species are taken into account in the daily operation of maintenance.
You can prevent the spread of Spanish snails in your yard by collecting the snails, removing piles of leaves and twigs, and keeping the lawn and other yard vegetation short. Check newly planted plants for Spanish hornet eggs. Water the plants sparingly and preferably during the day. Do not make open composts. And pick up dog droppings - they attract Spanish rutanas to eat! The simultaneous control of Spanish snails in a large area is important for successful control. In the 2024 season, collecting snails will be rewarded. Activate your snail pass. More information can be found below.
Riihimäki city snail passes will be used from Wednesday, May 15. Participatory budgeting led to a plan that suggested that a small reward could be obtained for collecting Spanish ruetanas. In this way, the prevention would attract new residents
The Etanapassi campaign works as follows: Collect Spanish snails in e.g. liter cardboard cans. Bring the cans to the SER point of the city depot, the recycling center or to the city's snail strike events. In these places, Spanish snails collected from one liter cans get one stamp in your snail passport.
With six stamps, the passport is full and you can redeem the reward with it. The prize is, for example, a ticket to BioRex or Riihimäki Youth Theatre, tickets to the beach, a gift card to the cafe Laurell or a car wash. The Etanapass reward is redeemed by contacting the city's guest sports team.
Etanapasses can be picked up at the Tietotuva Matkakeskus, the library info, the recycling center and the SER point of the city's central depot. Snail passports are also distributed at snail talks and you get a stamp for participating. The 50 fastest participants will be given the tools needed for collection, i.e. pliers and vinegar.
Participatory budgeting snail talks are organized six times, and they are announced on the Visit Häme and MenoInfo websites, as well as on the social media channels of Riihimäki urban engineering and Riihimäki urban development. The first talks of the season will be held in Petsamo at the start of the campaign on Wednesday, May 15, from 8.00:9.30 a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX a.m. Gathering next to the K-Market Otso recycling point.
You can redeem the full reward of the snail pass by contacting:
The rewards must be redeemed by 15.10.2024 October XNUMX. Attention! Put your name and address on the snail passport when you return the snail passport.
Snail passports are distributed to a maximum of three to one person for tax reasons.
Before starting the collection, pour about 1/3 of the brandy vinegar into the cardboard can. Snails die instantly in vinegar. Close the pre-collected can carefully with, for example, painter's tape and finally close the cans in a plastic bag.
You can use any salad/barbecue tongs as collection tools. The 50 fastest participants will receive tools (vinegar and tongs) for collection, if necessary.
For several years now, Park Services has been bringing 240-liter trash cans intended only for snails to locations selected based on the observations of the department's employees and residents. The snail dumps are placed in places that are also supported by the findings of the map surveys. Garbage can be found in the city from the map service.
First, kill the Spanish rutanas by cutting them in half lengthwise, or by crushing or dropping them into boiling water. The water should be removed before putting the snails in a closed container, for example an empty milk can.
One snail collected in the spring is hundreds of snails less in the fall. A huge thank you to all the hard-working municipal residents for this valuable work to combat alien species!
We are about to start the Snail Control campaign. Could you be the Etanakummi of your neighborhood? For example, we would like Etanakummi to organize 1-2 snail talks in its own area so that the city's park services would deliver the necessary equipment. In addition, we hope for an active flow of information about the presence of snails and the effects of control work, and we welcome development ideas. Sign up for the activity, contact information can be found below under Contact information.
If you would like to join the active Spanish Snail Control WhatsApp group that was already established last summer, please let us know your contact information.
Riihimäki was involved VieKas LIFE in the project (Finvasive LIFE+ project). The cooperation project focused on combating alien species and increasing alien species awareness continued until 2023.
The giant balsam control team, which started in 2017 with the VieKas project, fought giant balsam every year until the 2023 season. Get to know the group's activities by watching the prevention team's video on YouTube.

The city's park services will continue the fight against giant balsam.
Park services have been fighting and keeping records of giant pipes since the 1990s. Due to the long germination of the seeds, monitoring has also been done in old places where the giant pipe has not been found for years.
