Define ecosystem

Define is an open network that brings together the Finnish Defence Forces, defence and security companies, educational and research institutions, and several actors in Riihimäki and the Kanta-Häme region. The network aims to accelerate the innovation and development activities of the participants and increase the turnover of the companies.

Define is open to all innovative companies operating in the defense and security sector. We provide a platform for the development of technology and innovation and support companies in financing and business growth.

Finnish technology and innovation expertise is world-class. NATO membership has led to a huge increase in demand and market for Finnish high-tech defense products.

What is Define?

Defense Innovation Network Finland (Define) is an innovation ecosystem launched by the City of Riihimäki. We are developing a world-class defense and security innovation network that generates new expertise and accelerates innovation in the field. Our activities generate dual-use technologies that serve military organizations and civilian society, improve the defense capabilities of Finland and NATO, strengthen Europe's strategic self-sufficiency and the overall security of citizens, and accelerate the growth of our companies. Several significant defense and security companies operate in the Riihimäki area.

Define's operations are focused on Riihimäki because the city already has top-notch expertise in the field. For example, Riihimäki is home to the Defence Forces' cybersecurity and digitalization and leadership system competence center, where specialists are trained, research is conducted, and innovations are created.

Riihimäki has a nationally and internationally unique curriculum, which includes a robotics education path from early childhood education to upper secondary school. The Riihimäki unit of Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) trains top experts in technical fields. In the future, for example, those who have completed cyber conscript service will be able to enter higher education directly. Total Security Technology Solutions is the latest education at Häme University of Applied Sciences, which leads to a master's degree in applied sciences.
