The townspeople are welcome to get to know Riihimäki Power Plant and its development plans at the beginning of June. Renovating the power plant for a new purpose is a significant step in developing the city's attractiveness. In the future, Voimala will give a reason to stop at Riihimäki.

The city of Riihimäki has long been looking for ideas for the new use of the Voimala property, located next to the train station, through municipal surveys and participatory workshops.

Consulting firm Ramboll has now designed Voimala's future operating concept based on ideas received from the townspeople and stakeholders.

Plans are needed in further funding applications and in negotiations with potential investors. So far, the project has received development support according to the EU's New European Bauhaus initiative.

The goal is to open from 2027

The decision to overhaul Voimala is to be made during the summer or fall of 2023, depending on the investors who join. The goal is for Voimala to be opened for use in 2027, when Riihimäki is also planning an apartment fair.

"We are currently negotiating with four interested investors about Voimala's future operations and the composition of the group of owners and users. The city's goal is to develop Voimala into a living room for city residents open to all," says Mika Herpiö, director of vitality for the city of Riihimäki.

The city is doing Voimala's development together with YIT, the property's current owner.
