The expansion and renovation work on the old city hall on Kalevankatu will begin in early March. The building will be completed by the end of 2026.
The renovation of the old city hall is the city's largest building construction investment this year. 3,0 million euros have been allocated for this year. In total, 3,6 million euros have been allocated for the project.
The expansion and renovation project will see the city hall receive a new accessible entrance, an accessible extension, an elevator, space changes and technical updates. The new extension, which includes the entrance and elevator, will be located at the site of the former, already demolished entrance, extending from it to the northwest end.
The building's most important interior spaces, such as the council chamber, the city council room and the east end stairwell, will remain in their original form, respecting the building's cultural history. The building is significant in terms of cityscape and is protected.
After the basic renovation, the old city hall will house the Riihimäki office of the South Häme Employment Area (EHTA). The building will house nearly 60 employees from the South Häme Employment Area, the State Employment, Development and Administration Centre (KEHA Centre), the State Vitality Centre (former ELY Centre) and the city's own employment and integration services.
In addition, city council meetings will be moved from Uramo School back to the council chamber of the city hall. The protected council chamber and the city government meeting room will receive modern AV technology, which will be brought into the premises discreetly, respecting the conservation values.
The group rooms will also be available for meeting and training purposes in the evenings. Group rooms can be booked via an electronic booking system.
The main contractor for the construction project is Jalon Uusimaa Oy, the HVAC contractor is Putki-Valtti Oy, and the electrical contractor is SK-Tekniikka Oy.
The building will be covered with a hood to protect it from the weather during the construction period. The most disruptive activity for city residents will be the earthmoving work around the building during the initial stages of the work.
There will be temporary changes to the routes on the streets near the old city hall during the construction period. These will be announced separately closer to the changes.
The so-called new part of Riihimäki city hall was demolished in the summer of 2023. The new part was completely taken out of use due to indoor air problems in 2016. The protected old city hall remained intact, awaiting renovation.
The old city hall was designed by architect Veli Valorinta and was completed in 1948.
The old city hall is located in the center of Riihimäki at Kalevankatu 1.
