The Environmental Health Department of South Häme advises the public to avoid swimming at Harviala beach in Janakkala. The recommendation is valid until further notice.

Fecal bacteria detected in swimming water

Preliminary results of a systematic swimming water sample taken from the Harviala swimming area on July 9, 2025, have detected an amount of E. coli intestinal bacteria exceeding the maximum permitted limit. This means that disease-causing microbes may be present in the water.

As a precaution, swimming is not recommended until the results of follow-up testing are available. The temporary decline in water quality is likely due to a bypass discharge from the Turenki wastewater treatment plant following heavy rainfall earlier in the week.

A follow-up water sample will be taken on July 11, and the results will be announced as soon as they are available.

Swimming waters are monitored regularly

The Environmental Health Department of South Häme monitors the water quality of the public beaches of Forssa, Hausjärvi, Humppila, Janakkala, Jokioinen, Loppi, Riihimäki, Tammela and Ypäjä during the swimming season from June 15 to August 31. There are a total of 46 public beaches in these municipalities.

The most recent water samples were taken this week. Completed test results are published on the City of Riihimäki’s website and also made available at the beaches.
