The South Häme Environmental Health Department monitors the water quality of public beaches during the swimming season from June 15 to August 31. 3–4 bathing water samples are taken from the beaches during the summer, depending on the estimated number of visitors to the beach.
The results of bathing water samples are visible on notice boards at bathing beaches and on the environmental health website.
In addition to the supervised public beaches, there are also swimming areas in the area that are not supervised and no water samples are taken from them during the swimming season. An up-to-date list of beaches is maintained on the website of the City of Riihimäki. There have been a few changes to the list since the previous swimming season.
Environmental Health does not conduct daily blue-green algae monitoring at swimming beaches. The presence of blue-green algae is monitored by sensory means, especially when taking samples. If blue-green algae is detected on the beach, information is provided on the beach notice board and instructions are given to swimmers. Individual blue-green algae observations have been made even before the start of the swimming season.
The blue-green algae situation on the beach can vary very quickly due to weather conditions, even during the same day. It is always a good idea to visually check the quality of the bathing water before swimming.
Poison ivy grows naturally on some supervised beaches. All parts of poison ivy are highly toxic and should not be touched. When the plant's surface is broken, it releases a toxin called kikutoxin.
Poison ivy can cause serious poisoning if swallowed. Beach administrators will provide information about the presence of poison ivy on the beaches in question.
