The City of Riihimäki is organizing an open event for everyone about the future of the city. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 16 to 19 p.m. at the Atom shopping center (Eteläinen Asemakatu 3). The Riihimäki Vision – A Question of the Future event will be organized in the lobby of the shopping center, in the immediate vicinity of the D-entrance.

"At the event, the city's residents will have the opportunity to tell us what Riihimäki should be like in 2040. I hope that the city's residents will come and tell us what is possible, desirable or necessary for the development of the city," says Mayor Jouni Eho.

In addition to the mayor, the attendees will include Director of Vitality Anna-Riitta Kujala, Technical Director Maria Vasko, Director of Education Jari Lausvaara, and Chair of the City Board Miia Nahkuri.

Citizens involved in strategy work

At the event, city residents will have the opportunity to build a city vision board together with city employees. The board's input, as well as the residents' thoughts and insights, will be utilized in updating the city's strategy.

"The strategy is being updated with a slightly lighter touch this time. This is because both the city council and the city government are generally satisfied with the choices in the current strategy," says Eho.

Strategy to be decided in autumn 2026

The new strategy will be adopted in autumn 2026. According to the Local Government Act, the city must have a strategy in which the council decides on the long-term goals of the municipality's operations and finances. The current RakasRiksu2035 strategy was approved in 2022. According to it, Riihimäki's goal is to be an irresistible city of fifteen minutes, a home for future creators and a community of sustainable growth.

According to the city's vision, "Riihimäki is the most beautiful and courageous community in the solar system, with happy residents and excellent companies. A great little town is home to meaningful everyday life, culture and future expertise. We combine growth and a first-class quality of life. We change the world – without forgetting about fun."

In addition to the event at Atom, extensive work on updating the strategy has been carried out last autumn and this spring with both decision-makers and city staff. The children's parliament also discussed the city's future in April 2026.
