The City of Riihimäki has built a so-called Bike Park in the Riutta outdoor recreation area at the request of the city's residents. The opening of the Bike Park will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 14 p.m.

At Riutta Bike Park, city residents can try out two different downhill cycling routes. One is suitable for beginners and the other offers a challenge for more experienced downhill cyclists.

“Mountain bike trails have long been a dream of city residents. I am really happy that we were able to make this wish come true through participatory budgeting. I hope that as many people as possible will dare to try the sport at the opening ceremony, when we have riding instructors to guide them in using the trails,” encourages Sports Manager Markus Rantsi.

You can also come and try it out on a regular bike

Riutta Bike Park will be for independent use by city residents in the future.

"The bike park emphasizes safe riding and consideration for others, as there is no staff or supervision. For example, when going uphill to the beginning of downhill routes, you always follow your own route, the so-called ascent line," Rantsi continues.

You don't need a fancy bike to get there. What's important is that your bike's brakes are efficient and in good condition, and that you adjust your speed to your bike and your skills. One of the downhill cycling routes is very suitable for beginners.

The largest implementation of participatory budgeting this year

The implementation of the bike park area is the city's largest participatory budgeting project in terms of euros in 2025. The project cost 40 euros, while the entire participatory budgeting program will cost 000 euros. The original proposal was to build a mountain bike trail in Riutta in addition to the bike park, but this was dropped from the plans.

"It was already known at a fairly early stage that both a bike park and a mountain bike trail could not be implemented with the budgeted money. We had a steering group of enthusiasts, who decided to focus on a downhill-focused implementation," Rantsi says.
