The Riihimäki City Council convened for its first meeting of the new council term on Monday, June 9, 2025. At the meeting, the council elected, among other things, the presidium, members and chairmen of the city board, and representatives of the committees.

Riku Bitter (Kol.) will start as the chairman of the council. In addition, the council elected three vice-chairmen. Aino-Kaisa Pekonen (Left) was elected first vice-chairman, Silja Nurmi (Sd.) second and Sari Susanna Jokinen (Green) third.

The City Council is chaired by Miia Nahkuri (sd). Eija Aittola (koll.) was elected vice-chair. The other members of the council are Lauri Jormanainen (sd), Niina Bitter (sd), Petri Mattila (sd), Mikael Leinonen (koll.), Tero Nuora (koll.), Minna Belik (left), Erja Hirviniemi (left), Hannele Saari (kd) and Jari Heikkinen (ps).

The following representatives were appointed as chairmen and vice-chairmen of the Riihimäki City Councils at the meeting:

  • Education and Welfare Board: Chairman Arja Tylli (left) and Vice Chairman Jessica Sonko (Congress).
  • Vitality Committee: Chairman Mikko Arminen (SD) and Vice Chairman Aino Närkki (Collective).
  • Technical Committee: Chairman Jari Viita (Congress) and Vice Chairman Päivi Sandberg (left).
  • Audit Committee: Chair Salka Orivuori (Greens) and Kristina Ruuskanen (Social Democrats).
  • Central Election Board: Chairman Janne Kankaantähti (Sd.) and Riku Sutinen (Kok.).

In addition, the council appointed representatives to, among other things, the departments, the water supply company, and the waste committee. More detailed personnel selections will be published on the city's website by the end of June.

The city councilors exercise the highest decision-making power in the city. The council consists of 43 elected city councilors. About a third of the councilors changed compared to the previous term. The largest group on the council is the Social Democrats, with a total of 14 seats. The second largest party on the council is the Coalition Party (11 representatives). The council term lasts four years, i.e. until 2029.
