Riihimäki joins the Green Deal circular economy commitment

The City of Riihimäki has made a commitment to the circular economy green deal. The goal is a future where the circular economy is the way the city organization operates, an everyday choice for city residents, and a visible part of companies' operations and service offerings.

The Circular Economy Green Deal is a voluntary commitment led by the state to promote the transition to a circular economy and the reduction of natural resource use. The most impactful actions and targets for the circular economy transition relate to the built environment, industry, sustainable consumption and business, as well as the energy system and food chain from the perspective of natural resource consumption. The Circular Economy Green Deal is aimed at companies, industry associations, municipalities and counties, and other actors.

The city is committed to promoting sustainable consumption.

Riihimäki's commitment is related to sustainable consumption. The commitment includes two parts, one of which promotes the circular economy and cooperation of companies. The second part promotes circular economy services offered to city residents by both the city and companies and the third sector.

"Riihimäki's commitment emphasizes cooperation, change towards a more sustainable everyday life, and experiments and innovations. Our commitment highlights how everyone can make an impact and how every action matters," describes environmental expert Jenni Takala.

During the preparation of the commitment, the city introduced Riksukuppi to its events, meetings and coffee rooms. In addition, the clothing swaps during the Circular Economy Week were very popular. More of these types of pilots, experiments and changes are being sought with the circular economy green deal commitment extending to 2035. More detailed implementation planning will start next autumn.

Opportunities for experiments and pilots

At the heart of the circular economy green deal is the idea of ​​a communal change. The goal is not just to implement individual measures, but a systemic change that promotes a sustainable economy, carbon neutrality and the conservation of natural resources. With its own commitment, the city of Riihimäki wants to increase cooperation, offer opportunities for experiments and pilots for companies and initiate a cultural change from disposable to sustainable and to redirect consumption towards services.

"Riihimäki's commitment highlights the importance of services in terms of the circular economy. Services are also very important in increasing the vitality of the city," says Anna-Riitta Kujala, Director of Vitality.

The commitment is a continuation of long-term development work

The city has been striving for sustainable consumption, zero waste and zero emissions since 2017 through the goals of the Fisu network (Finnish Sustainable Communities). The Fisu network currently includes fourteen municipalities.

Riihimäki has developed circular economy business networks, for example through the RiiCycle KIRITYS project. The project promoted the operations of the RiiCycle business network, which has been operating since 2019. The project resulted in a proposal for circular economy tips (energy and bio-based materials) and recommendations for developing a circular economy-themed business network.
