Riihimäki raises the flag on evacuee flag day, April 20th
The city of Riihimäki will fly its flag on April 20th in memory and honor of the evacuees. On Sunday, Finnish flags will be raised in Riihimäki in the yards of schools, daycare centers, and office buildings, as well as on the Glassblower statue in the city center.
The first-ever Evacuee Flag Day honors those who have been forced to move from their homes permanently or temporarily lost their homes due to war.
By flying the flag on Evacuees' Day, we highlight the importance of peace in an unstable world, honor the work of evacuees in the reconstruction of Finland, and maintain historical knowledge about Finland's wars and the evacuees who left their homes due to wars for future generations.
An unofficial Evacuee Flag Day is being celebrated annually at the initiative of the Karelian Federation.
