Riihimäki launches updating of city strategy

The City of Riihimäki will update the city's strategy during 2026. The City Board will discuss updating the city strategy at its meeting on Monday, January 12, 2026. According to the Local Government Act, the city must have a strategy in which the council decides on the long-term goals of the municipality's operations and finances.

"After the change of council, it is natural to update the strategy. The aim of the update is to make the strategy reflect the changes that have occurred in the city's operating environment and within the city. The strategy work provides an opportunity to examine together with city residents and decision-makers what factors make up the residents' functional everyday life and how we can ensure sustainable municipal finances well into the future," says Mayor Jouni Eho.

The current RakasRiksu2035 strategy was approved in 2022. Riihimäki's goal is to be

an irresistible quarter-hour city,
home of future creators,
a community of sustainable growth.

According to the city's vision, "Riihimäki is the most beautiful and courageous community in the solar system, with happy residents and excellent companies. A great little town is home to meaningful everyday life, culture and future expertise. We combine growth and a first-class quality of life. We change the world – without forgetting about fun."

The strategy work began in the fall of 2025 at a city council seminar. The city government and the city management team have also discussed the strategy. In late fall, the city carried out, among other things, an analysis of the operating environment.

"This time, the strategy is being updated with a slightly lighter touch than before. This is because both the city council and the city government are generally satisfied with the choices in the current strategy."

As the work progresses, city staff and residents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the city's strategy. The update will also utilize recent surveys, such as the resident survey completed in autumn 2025.
