The renovated Riihimäki swimming hall will open to city residents on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at 10.00 a.m. The swimming hall has been under renovation since February year 2023.
"Water is a favorite element for many people, and the city's residents have been asked to be patient and wait for the two-year renovation. However, the wait has been rewarded, as the swimming hall will open in a more beautiful setting than ever," says Sports Manager Markus Rantsi.
The swimming hall's initial opening date was around the turn of January/February. However, the opening date was revised by a month to the turn of February/March. Various commissioning tests and inspections will be carried out before the opening.

The total funding for the renovation of the swimming hall was 15,1 million euros at the start of the project. As the renovation progressed, needs for additional and modification work emerged, resulting in the city council changing the budget to 16,9 million euros. The project has been granted a state sports facility grant of 800 000 euros.
In construction contracts, and especially in renovation projects, additional and modification work is typical.
“The final costs of the swimming hall renovation will be known once all the work has been completed and the final financial statements have been made with the implementers,” says Technical Director Maria Vasko.
The new pools have given the indoor swimming hall a spa-like feel and improved accessibility. During the renovation, the swimming hall's technology and surfaces have been renewed.
New features include the largest slide that can fit in the indoor swimming hall, memorable outdoor pool, a cold water pool, and a multi-purpose raised floor pool. The gym also has new equipment.
"The swimming hall still allows for a variety of social activities, although the new pools will also bring a spa-like feel to the swimming hall. The raised-bottom pool also allows for a wide range of uses with the on-site sauna," Rantsi says.
The new gates at the swimming hall will be used to access the changing rooms with wristbands, which are also used to lock the changing rooms.
A separate changing room and washing area with sauna has now been built on the pool level for people with reduced mobility and other special groups. Customers can reserve this space in advance free of charge. The improvement in accessibility is also visible in automatic doors, contrasting colours and handrails. The swimming hall also has a lift that can be used to lift people with reduced mobility into the pool.
The swimming hall's elevator has been moved and the elevator also provides access to the outdoor swimming pool level. There is a sauna that will be put into use next summer.
The main designer of the basic renovation of the swimming hall has been Yrjö Majamaa from Arkkitehtitoimisto Majamaa Oy. The design consultant for the project was Vahanen Suunnittelupalvelut Oy, which was sold in part to AFRY at the beginning of 2022 (AFRY Finland Oy). The main contractor has been Consti Korjausrakentaminen Oy.
The construction project was very successful despite the tight schedule.
"The project was challenged by the needs for modification work, significantly more extensive demolition work than planned, the replacement of the entire tiling of the large pool, and the thorough renovation of the pool. However, we can be satisfied with the end result, as the set goals for functionality have been achieved and the swimming hall has been renovated for more versatile use," says construction manager Paavo Vuori.
The project aims to significantly improved energy efficiency.
“I want to pay special attention to improving the energy efficiency of the property. That was one of our main goals, and energy efficiency has now been improved by 36,5 percent. This has also entitled the city to obtain a more affordable green loan to implement the project,” Vuori says.
An adult ticket costs 6,50 euros during all opening hours. Tickets for all discount groups are 4 euros (children, seniors, conscripts, students). The entrance fee to the swimming hall includes use of the gym.
