Riihimäen Kotikulma Oy, a rental housing company owned by the city of Riihimäki, is starting to investigate whether it would be able to offer housing to special groups. The special groups being examined include seniors, students and those working in the Riihimäki garrison.

Kotikulma Oy currently serves all customer groups. The majority of apartments have income and asset limits.

"A lot is happening in the city of Riihimäki. NATO's new command and control system unit will be located in Riihimäki next year, and the Häme University of Applied Sciences campus will move to the railway station in 2028. The population of our city is changing and living in change. It is also good to examine the city's rental housing supply in light of population changes," says Jouni Eho, Mayor of Riihimäki.

Riihimäen Kotikulma Oy has signed an agreement with the consulting company Ramboll Oy to conduct a study. The study has just begun and will be completed during the spring.

During the study, the consulting company interviews representatives of special groups, for example representatives of Riihimäki educational institutions, representatives of the Riihimäki garrison, and representatives of senior associations, about their needs and wishes.

"With the help of the survey, we will get a better overall picture of the future needs of rental housing in Riihimäki. We will map out who would benefit from having apartments, what kind of apartments, where in Riihimäki and how much. If, according to the survey, a specific group has sufficient rental housing potential, we are ready to develop our housing supply and make financial commitments to development in accordance with the city's strategy," says Satu Lehtinen, CEO of Riihimäen Kotikulma Oy.

The work will result in alternative scenarios for special housing needs in Riihimäki. The scenarios take into account current and future quantitative and qualitative housing needs.

Once the study is complete, the board of directors of Kotikulma Oy will decide what concrete measures will be taken to potentially develop Kotikulma's rental housing supply for special groups.
