The population of Riihimäki grew considerably in February

The population of the town of Riihimäki grew significantly in February, by 59 people during the month. The increase was due to migration between municipalities (37 persons) and immigration (22 persons).

According to the vitality review of the Häme association, Riihimäki's population development has been on the rise for a year already, starting from February 2023. In February 2023, the population of Riihimäki was 28 and in February 339 it was 2024. In the period of one year, the population growth was therefore 28 inhabitants. The growth was stronger than in ten years.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary statistics, the population of Riihimäki grew by 0,5 percent last year. The increase in 2023 was based on the search for the homeland of Ukrainians who fled the war. It is significant that in February growth has also come from migration gains between municipalities.

"I am proud that the immigrants see Riihimäki as an attractive city. We are doing determined work in the reintegration of Ukrainians who fled the war. "Strategic development and thereby positive actions encourage us to move," says city manager Jouni Eho.

In its strategy, the city of Riihimäki aims for an annual population growth of 0,2 percent. For last year, the city exceeded this challenging goal.

The population growth in Kanta-Häme as a whole last year was 0,0 percent.

Better than average employment rate in the Riihimäki region

The unemployment rate in Finland as a whole was 10,8 percent in February. The figure shows an increase of 1,1 percentage points from a year ago. At the end of February, the unemployment rate in Kanta-Häme was slightly higher than the national level, at 10,2 percent.

In February, the unemployment rate in the Riihimäki region was the lowest among the regions in the province, at 9,3 percent. The number is explained by the excellent numbers of Lope and Hausjärvi.

The unemployment rate in Riihimäki was 10,5 percent in February. The city's strategic goal is that the unemployment rate is below the national average.

"The development of Riihimäki's unemployment rate in the long term is a success story. Even in February, the unemployment rate was lower than in Riihimäki among the station cities between Helsinki and Tampere, only in Akaa, says vitality director Mika Herpiö.
