National Cycling Week will be celebrated from 2 to 11 May 2025. The aim of Cycling Week is to encourage people to cycle and to highlight the benefits of cycling.
People's travel choices are influenced by traffic safety and the smoothness of travel. We can all influence this by knowing and following traffic rules. The rules protect everyone on the road – pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. When everyone knows and follows the rules, dangerous situations are reduced and you can travel with confidence.
This year, during the cycling theme week, the city of Riihimäki wants to increase awareness of cycling-related traffic rules through the "Getting to Know the Cycling Rules" pilot event.
The event, which will be held in the park on Monday, May 5, 2025, is aimed at 3rd–5th graders from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is open to all interested parties from 12 p.m. to 15 p.m. The event address is Park 2–4 (sand field).
The event is organized in collaboration with the Finnish Traffic Safety Agency, the Häme Police Department, the Association for the Promotion of Cycling in the Riihimäki and Hyvinkää Regions (PERH) and the Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK).
Participants will be able to review and practice the rules of cycling under the guidance of traffic safety students from Liikenneturva, PERH ry and HAMK. Liikenneturva will organize a cycling quiz that will test participants' knowledge of, among other things, the rules of giving way and the place of cyclists on different routes. HAMK students will illustrate the importance of using a bicycle helmet using a chicken egg helmet.
PERH ry instructors will lead pre-registered school groups on a pre-planned route in the morning through the streets surrounding the event venue. During the walk, they will provide practical guidance on how to act on different roads and intersections.
In the afternoon, instructors will check the condition of the bikes of those who wish to participate and, if necessary, perform minor quick maintenance. The police will be on site at the event to discuss traffic and other topics of interest to visitors.
During Cycling Week, you can also try out city bikes for free throughout the week. Hourly rentals are free.
You can also participate in the May 3-18 event On a bike without motors -challenge (go to our news).
Information added to the news on May 2nd that PERH ry instructors will only drive pre-registered school groups on the route in the vicinity of the event venue in the morning.
