Butterfly Park receives fourth Green Flag Award

The 25 green areas that have won the Green Flag Award were announced at the Lepaa exhibition today, August 13, 2026. Some are already familiar winners and two are completely new sites. Riihimäki Butterfly Park has renewed its logo, like many other parks in Finland.

Finland has been awarding the Green Flag Award to well-maintained and managed green areas for ten years. This year, for the first time, the Pietarsaari School Garden and the Mäki-Mati Family Park in Jyväskylä won the Green Flag Award.

The idea and maintenance of the butterfly park delighted the judges

The butterfly park impressed the judges with its excellent maintenance. The judges described the park as follows:

“The park, which is funnily branded with butterflies, is both excellently designed and well-maintained. In addition, the whole idea of ​​the park is brilliant: there are food plants available for butterflies and there is information about butterflies for visitors. The vegetation and functional areas are in good condition. Visitors are involved in collecting weeds and help is provided in identifying them.”

The butterfly park is located in the northern part of Riihimäki, in the Juppala district. The park has a variety of food plants for butterflies and there are information signs about butterflies in the area. The most spectacular butterflies, such as the damselfly, nettle and admiral butterflies, can be found in the park in late summer. The park received its first Green Flag Award in 2023. The park was established in 1996.

The Green Flag Award is an internationally significant recognition

The Green Flag Award is an award system that recognizes the quality of maintenance and management of green spaces. It is administered internationally by the UK environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and in Finland by the Finnish Green Environment Association. The Finnish Green Environment Association has a partner in the Built Environment degree programme at Häme University of Applied Sciences.

Green areas that have won the Finnish Green Flag Award join an international network of over 2,400 green areas in 17 different countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Turkey, Belgium, Spain and the United States.

Green areas support well-being and the vitality of the municipality

The year 2026 is the Green Environment Association's Wellbeing is Built in a Living Environment campaign year. The campaign year highlights the importance of the living environment for people's well-being. The campaign makes it visible how green areas in the built environment support everyday well-being, health and community, and strengthen the vitality of municipalities. The campaign highlights concrete examples from different parts of Finland - the Green Flag Award-winning sites are also part of this whole.
