Speed limits in the Riihimäki city centre will be reduced from the current 40 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour. Speed limits on Lasitehtaantie and Uhkolankatu will be reduced from 50 kilometres per hour to 40 kilometres per hour. Traffic signs in accordance with the new restrictions are currently being installed. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of next week (by 21 September).

The new speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour in the city center applies to the entire city center area, except for the western end of Kalevankatu, Etelään Viertotie and Eteläinen Asemakatu. On these streets, the speed limit remains unchanged at 40 kilometers per hour.

The speed limit in the glass factories will be reduced to 40 kilometers per hour between Kirjauksentie and Tehtaankatu. The speed limit of 130 kilometers per hour between Tehtaankatu and Highway 50 will remain unchanged.

On Uhkolankatu, the reduction in speed limit applies to the entire section of the street.

Changes improve traffic safety

Reduced speed limits aim to improve road safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Lower speeds reduce the risk of accidents and the damage caused by accidents. Slower speeds shorten the stopping distance of a vehicle and improve the driver's ability to react.

The changes will increase the amenity of the city center

Lowering the speed limits in the city centre will calm traffic and divert through traffic away from the city centre. It is expected that some of the traffic on Keskuskatu and Hämeenkatu will be shifted to Sakonkatu and Eteläin Viertotie.

The change will increase the amenity of the city center, as, for example, traffic pollution and noise levels will decrease. The reduction in through traffic will also calm the streets near schools in the city center area.

Changes are based on board decisions

The changes to the city center area that are now being made are based on the Riihimäki City Center and Access Roads Traffic System Plan 18, approved by the Urban Development Board on May 2021, 2040. The plan presents a development measure to change the speed limits in the city center of Riihimäki mainly to 30 kilometers per hour.

The changes to Lasitehtaantie and Uhkolankatu are based on the change in traffic planning principles decided by the Riihimäki Technical Committee on 3 June 2025. In the decision, the traffic planning principles were changed to reduce the speed limits on Lasitehtaantie and Uhkolankatu to 40 kilometres per hour.

Reducing speeds also supports the Riihimäki Sustainable Mobility Plan approved by the City Council on 22 December 2021. The plan sets the city's goal of improving the attractiveness of sustainable forms of mobility. Lowering speed limits will encourage city residents to walk and cycle, while improving traffic safety and reducing traffic noise.

The change also implements the city strategy's theme of a pleasant quarter of a city.
