Students in grades 6–9 at Riihimäki comprehensive schools can swim for free at the Riihimäki swimming hall every Thursday from 14.15 p.m. to 16.00 p.m. during the rest of the autumn. The swimming hours are self-guided, meaning there is no supervised activity. However, there is a school PT (youth physical education instructor) and a youth worker to monitor safety and behavior in addition to the swimming lifeguards.
The first swimming session was on Thursday, November 6, 2025. There were about twenty young people from Harjunrinne, Kara and Pohjolanrinne middle schools. At the end of the first swimming session, the young people left the hall satisfied.
"It was nice to go swimming, when you could do whatever you wanted and it was so chill. I haven't been swimming at the Riihimäki swimming pool very often," says ninth-grader Iiris Kaikkonen from Harjunrinne School.
"The best part was being with friends! The free swimming session for young people is really good, as not everyone can afford to go swimming at the swimming pool otherwise. I wish the swimming session was an hour longer," adds sixth-grader Elias Jauhiainen from Kara School.
School youth worker Mirja Päivinen is delighted that the youth swimming shift was organized in cooperation with the city's various departments. With a youth worker approach, it is possible to meet young people in time, cheer them on and intervene in inappropriate behavior if necessary.
"It's a great thing that this was organized. The fact that young people can spend time at the swimming pool on their own brings more options for leisure activities through physical activity. The fact that swimming lessons are free of charge also equalizes young people's opportunities to participate," says Päivinen.
The free swimming session are intended for young people in grades 6–9 from Riihimäki. You can take part in the swimming session one or more times. You only need to register once. Check out the swimming schedule and sign up (uusi.kuntapalvelut.fi).
The last swimming session of the fall is on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Students and guardians will be informed about a possible continuation in the spring semester in the Wilma application used by schools.
