Luodetie becomes Riihimäki's first village road

Luodetie, located in the Uramo district of Riihimäki, will be converted into a village road. This is the first village road solution in Riihimäki.
A village road is a traffic arrangement that aims to improve walking and cycling conditions, increase traffic safety, direct motorists to more suitable routes, and calm car traffic in the area in the long term.

A village road is particularly suitable for locations where there is little car traffic and driving speeds are low.

What does village road mean in practice?

On the village road, the roadway is a single lane for cars and the shoulders are wider than usual for pedestrians and cyclists. The roadway is narrower than normal, and cars use the shoulders when meeting.

The roadside has a dedicated space for pedestrians and one-way cycling areas in both directions.

The Luodetie village road will be implemented with road markings and signboards. The carriageway will be separated from the shoulder by an extension of the edge line, and pedestrian and cyclist spaces will be marked with symbols implemented in the street.
Village road signboards will be placed at the beginning and end of the street. In addition, road markings indicating a 30 kilometer per hour speed limit will be implemented at both ends of the street on Luodetie.

The solution is being implemented as a trial.

The village road arrangement will be implemented as a trial. If the solution is found to be effective, it will become permanent. The trial is planned to begin later this year.

On-street parking is still permitted, but parking restrictions may be considered if it poses a safety risk or disrupts other traffic.

A traffic control plan will be prepared for the Luodetie village road solution, which will be subject to an official decision by the responsible traffic planner.
