The European Mobility Week is celebrated annually from 16 to 22 September. The purpose of the week is to encourage people to think about their everyday movement choices and its effects on the environment, society and health.
During the European Mobility Week, European cities organize events to promote sustainable movement. The week ends with Car Free Day on Sunday, September 22. This year, the theme of European Mobility Week is shared urban spaces.
In Riihimäki, traveling on R-buses (including R-ride) and renting city bikes is free of charge during the entire theme week. In the case of city bikes, free of charge applies to rentals of a maximum of one hour.
A bus buddy operation has been started in R traffic. A bus friend is a volunteer guide who helps in learning how to use the bus and goes along on the trip to help.
The bus friend can advise on, for example, finding and reading timetables, buying a ticket and ordering an R-ride. The bus friend will also guide you on how to proceed when boarding the bus. The bus buddy's help costs nothing.
It's a good idea to try using the bus during the theme week, when traveling is for free.
The volunteer work of the city of Riihimäki is responsible for bus buddy activities. You can inquire about a bus buddy by calling 050 300 2202 or sending an email to maarit.lindholm-teravainen@riihimaki.fi.
The city's sports center organizes a free sport tryout day during European Mobility Week on Saturday, September 21. The sport trials are aimed at 18–29-year-olds and 65-year-old people.
At the event, you can try, for example, mountain biking, bocce jumping and walking football. Find out about the sports trial day on the sports center's Guided exercise page and on the sports center's Facebook page.
