The City of Riihimäki will organize a hearing regarding the closure of Peltosaari School. The event will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, in the auditorium of Riihimäki Upper Secondary School (Koulukatu 5, entrance to the upper secondary school from Hämeenkatu). The event will start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. The event will be attended by the City's Director of Education, Jari Lausvaara, and the Head of Education, Outi Ervasti. The event is open to all city residents.

The hearing is part of the preparation for the closure of Peltosaari School and preschool. According to the current service network decision, Peltosaari School has not been allocated premises from August 2026.

In addition to the event, city residents can ask questions and express their opinions about the closure of Peltosaari School by email to the city registry office, kirjaamo@riihimaki.fi. Questions and opinions on the matter must be received by the registry by February 19, 2026.

The Education and Welfare Committee will discuss the future of the school at its meeting on Wednesday, February 25. After the committee, the matter will proceed to the City Board and City Council.

The city has restarted preparations for the future of Peltosaari School following a decision by the Hämeenlinna Administrative Court. The Administrative Court overturned the decision made by the city council at the end of last year to close down the Peltosaari School. According to the Administrative Court, the decision had been made in the wrong order and the city had not provided sufficient opportunities for influence as required by the Administrative Procedure Act.

"Peltosaari School has not been allocated any more premises since August of this year. Therefore, the matter must be prepared for the board to make a decision. The hearing is an essential part of the administrative preparation," says Director of Education Jari Lausvaara.

In December 2025, the Riihimäki City Council decided to update the early childhood education and basic education service network. According to the schedule set by the council, the update work should be completed in May 2026. Preparations regarding the future of Peltosaari School will be carried out as a separate matter from the service network study, so that preparations and information regarding the next academic year can be carried out in time.
