The preliminary results of the municipal elections have been completed – Riihimäki's voter turnout was 50,6

The municipal elections were held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the same time as the regional elections. A total of approximately 11 votes were cast in the municipal elections in Riihimäki. The voter turnout percentage of Riihimäki was 400 out of approximately 50,6 eligible voters. The share is slightly higher than in the previous municipal elections in 23, when the voter turnout percentage in Riihimäki was 100.

Riihimäki had a lower voter turnout than the national average. The nationwide turnout in the municipal elections was 54,2. This is slightly lower than in the previous municipal elections in Finland, 55,1.

The number of rejected votes increased

There were approximately four times more rejected votes in Riihimäki than in the previous election, 277 votes were rejected. In the 2021 municipal elections, 65 votes were rejected.

"Some of the rejected votes are explained by the fact that voters had put the numbers for the municipal and regional elections on the wrong ballots. Some of the ballots were blank or had other inappropriate markings drawn on them," says Administrative Manager Jarkko Luukkonen.

There are 43 seats in the Riihimäki City Council

The Riihimäki voting results broadly follow the national voting results. The Social Democrats will emerge as the largest party on the city council ahead of the National Coalition Party. According to the results, just over a third of the city council members will be re-elected for the next term. The average age of the elected persons is 51,7 years.

According to preliminary results before the audit, the Social Democrats will gain five more seats in the city council than they currently have (9 > 14). The National Coalition Party will retain its seats (11). The Left Alliance will lose one seat (8 > 7). The Christian Democrats will retain its seats (3). The Finns Party will lose four seats (7 > 3). The Greens will retain three seats. The Centre Party will increase its seats by one seat to two. The Movement Now will lose its only seat in the council.

The new city council will operate for the next four-year term, until 2029. The Riihimäki City Council has 43 seats. The city councilors exercise the highest decision-making power in the city.

The result will be confirmed in a verification count on Wednesday.

A total of 156 candidates from eight different parties were running in the municipal elections in Riihimäki.

Parties negotiate about city council and board seats

The municipal elections directly determine the membership of the city council. The city council's presidium, members of the city government and members of the committees are the result of negotiations between political parties.

The parties' negotiations on the number of seats are based on the number of votes cast by the city's residents in the municipal elections. The parties can use their own criteria in their selection of personnel, such as experience, competence and willingness. The parties will hold negotiations in the coming weeks.

The current council term ends on May 31, 2025. The new council will begin on June 1, 2025.

The last meeting of the outgoing council in Riihimäki will be on May 26. The first meeting of the new council will be on June 9.
