Kokonharju's site plan has progressed to the proposal stage. The plan proposal material is available for viewing on the city's website 15.3. from

Kokonharju, located in the northeastern part of the city, is the main area of the Housing Fair planned for Riihimäki in 2027.

Kokonharju will form a natural residential area with small houses, where a distinctive look and versatile community living solutions will be created.

With the site plan, Kokonharju will have 32 square meters of residential building rights and 000 square meters for services. This practically means 2 detached house plots. You can build small apartment buildings, terraced houses, urban small houses and detached houses on six plots of land. In terms of calculation, the formula enables an estimated 000 new residents to the area.

Kokonharjunkatu as the main street of the area

In the plan proposal, a total of 26 residential blocks, one service block, extensive local recreation areas and a playground are assigned to the area. In the southern part of the planning area, Kokonharjunkatu, branching off from Uusi Karhintie to the west, will be aligned, which will gather the traffic of the new residential area.

In the vicinity of Kokonharjunkatu, more efficient, company-style housing construction and a service plot, which enables nearby services, such as business premises, but also housing, are indicated.

"The function of Kokonharjunkatu as a main street is emphasized with 2-3-story buildings bordering close to the street area and the possibility of building a roundabout," characterizes master plan designer Otto Mäkelä.

Shifting blocks, swamp prints and height differences create distinctiveness

The characteristic features of the area, such as large shifting boulders, valuable marsh depressions and height differences, are taken into account in the planning of green connections and areas. An interesting walking route is formed in the middle of the area, along which are placed, among other things, a huge boulder next to a ridge-like lookout point and bog prints.

"From the vantage point you can see well all the way to the center of Riihimäki, for example Voimala's chimney stands out clearly," says planning manager Niina Matkala.

"The water balance and preservation of tupas wool basket prints, which are valuable in terms of nature's diversity, are ensured by planning regulations. Special attention has also been paid to the continuity of access for bats and flying squirrels in the planning solution," says Matkala.

Access to Hatlamminsuo and the fitness track will be improved

In the Kokonharju site plan, a new street connection named Keidassuontaival is planned for Kisko's house. Small parking areas and a narrow public transport street in accordance with the station plan, together with high-quality pedestrian and cycling routes, improve access to Hatlamminsuo and the garrison's fitness track by different means of transportation.

The name of the new residential area, Kokonharju, stems from the steep terrain in the central part of the area, which has ridge-like features in places, and from the well-established name Kokko in the surrounding area.

"In the middle of the area, on top of a steep hillside, there is a large boulder, Kokkokivi. The local recreation area in the middle of the area is named Kokkokivinpuisto after the boulder. The nomenclature of the planning area is derived from the plant and bird species of the area's nature and bird surveys. In addition, the nomenclature has been influenced by the nature of Hatlamminsuo", says Otto Mäkelä, the pattern designer.

Construction method guidelines ensure the quality of construction

The 2027 Housing Fair is planned to be held in the Kokonharju area.

"The site plan includes a construction method guideline, which aims to ensure the quality and uniformity of the construction, so that Asuntomessut can be implemented as a high-level, interesting entity and at the same time ensure that the area has its own recognizable identity", describes project manager Riikka Uusikulku.
