The library has now a tool loan desk

Thanks to participatory budgeting, the Riihimäki city library got a tool lending point!
In order to select the tools, the library conducted a two-part customer survey during the spring, in which one could vote on the tools to be purchased with post-it notes in the library, and the other was an electronic zef survey online. The budget reserved for the tools lending point was €1000, which limited the amount of tools to be acquired. Some of the equipment requested in the survey could not be implemented due to the possible need for maintenance of the equipment or the need for space. The purchase of the sewing machine will also be postponed. Among the desired tools, trash cans are already in the library's selection of loanable items.
The tools lending point has the following tools:
- cordless drill set
- impact drill
- drill bit set
- food processor
- sander
- hammer drill
- jigsaw
- jigsaw
- hygrometer
- structural indicator
- distance measuring device
- line laser
- tool and accessory kit
- spirit level
- screwdriver set
- summer
- measuring tape
The tools are located in the library's equipment warehouse, which means they can be borrowed during the library's service hours, and reserved tools can also be borrowed during self-service hours. The loan period is 14 days and the late fee is in accordance with the library's valid price list. You need a library card to borrow. Equipment can also be reserved, but the loan cannot be renewed. The customer himself is responsible for the safe and proper use of the tools he borrows. For a broken or lost tool, compensation according to the purchase price of the tool will be charged from the customer. The tools must be returned to the Riihimäki library cleaned and dry during the library's service hours.
In addition to library material, the Riihimäki city library can borrow e.g. exercise equipment and nepsy aids, so borrowing tools through the library system expands the loan facility and makes it possible to get tools free of charge for everyone.
The goal of participatory budgeting in Riihimäki is to ideate, decide and implement an even better and more functional home in Riihimäki. The citizens of the city get to decide how the public funds available to the city are used, and in 2024, 100 euros have been set aside for the implementation of selected osbu targets. One of the ideas chosen for implementation was a tool borrowing point, which is natural to implement in a city library.
