The city supports the campus project with 7,5 million euros, the city government will discuss the issue on Monday

At its meeting on Monday, December 2, 2024, the Riihimäki city council will discuss, among other things, the continuation of the Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) and Hyria education campus project.
According to Mayor Jouni Eho's proposal, the city would participate in the costs of the university of applied sciences' campus project with 7,5 million euros, add the amount to the financial plan for the following years and make a binding decision on the amount in connection with the 2026 budget. In addition, a more detailed contract would be drawn up for the project, which would be approved by the city government.
The city of Riihimäki, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) and Hyria education and training (Hyria) signed a letter of intent in autumn 2023, the aim of which is to create a new campus area in the Riihimäki station area. The new campus of the University of Applied Sciences would be located in Matkakeskus during the years 2026 and 2027. At the same time, Hyria would buy the current properties of the university of applied sciences in Riihimäki. Hyria's purpose is to transfer part of its Sakonkatu operations to the property vacated by the University of Applied Sciences. In addition, the site plan of the Sakonkatu property would be changed to partly reflect the new purpose of use.
The condition of the project's implementation is that the city and HAMK reach an agreement with the current owner of the property, Lähi-Tapiola, on the sale price of the property and the building.
The functions of the university of applied sciences would be located in the low-lying part of Matkakeskus, which is to be renovated and expanded, the so-called Liikerata. The tower part of the building would be managed by Riihimäki Tilat ja Kehitys Oy, from which the city would rent premises. During 2025, flexible and modern work spaces for around 140 employees of the city of Riihimäki will be built on the top floors of the tower. The city has a total of approximately 1100 employees.
The campus project supports the city's strategy
The development of the station area is a key project in terms of the vitality of the city of Riihimäki. The city's goal is to be an irresistible city, the home of the creators of the future and a community of sustainable growth. When realized, the campus project promotes all three goals mentioned in the strategy. In addition, by locating in Matkakeskus, the university of applied sciences strengthens its presence in Riihimäki. HAMK's goal is to have decisions related to the project made at the beginning of 2025. HAMK has launched two new international engineering training programs in Riihimäki in autumn 2024.
The city's support for the campus project will proceed to the council after consideration by the city board. Riihimäki city council meets next time on December 9, 2024.
