The Riihimäki City Council decided at its meeting on March 16, 2026, to close Peltosaari School from the beginning of August 2026.

According to the decision, in the next academic year, approximately 60 students from Peltosaari School will transfer to other schools in Riihimäki, mainly to Pohjoisen, Patastenmäki and Herajoki schools. The future 3rd and 5th grades of general education will transfer as whole groups, but the future 4th grade students will be dispersed to different schools. The admission of their siblings and friends to the same school will be taken into account as much as possible. In the autumn of 2025, the school will no longer have a 1st grade, so there will be no 2nd grade.

The City Board discussed the closure of the school earlier in its meeting on Monday, March 9, 2026. The City Board was unanimous in its decision to close the Peltosaari School. The Education and Welfare Committee also unanimously submitted the closure decision to the City Board.

The old Peltosaari School building was demolished in January 2023. Peltosaari School has operated in temporary premises in Kalevantalo.

One indicator was added to the well-being plan

The city council decided at its meeting to approve a well-being plan for the city for the period 2026–2029. The aim of the well-being plan is to promote the well-being, health and inclusion of the residents of Riihimäki. The focus of Riihimäki's new well-being plan is everyday choices, everyday environments, everyday resources and agency.

The city council unanimously decided to add one indicator to the well-being plan: a cost calculator for immobility and being sedentary. The calculation model was developed by the UKK Institute.

The plan guides the city's well-being work and serves as the basis for decision-making, service development, and multidisciplinary cooperation.

The plan has been developed through extensive collaboration with various city departments, organizations, residents, and other stakeholders.
