City Council: RTOY may participate in the acquisition of the Travel Center
The Riihimäki City Board issued a preliminary owner's opinion regarding the Travel Center project at its meeting held on Monday, February 24, 2025. According to the preliminary opinion, the city-owned business company Riihimäen Tilat ja Kehitys Oy (RTOY) may participate in acquiring the Travel Center for its and Häme University of Applied Sciences' (HAMK) ownership.
Previously, the city government had already given a preliminary understanding that RTOY would be allowed to participate in the Travel Center project by participating in the project plan and investment, and by expanding its ownership stake.
The city has been negotiating with Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) and Hyria Education Oy on a project to create a new campus area for the university in the train station area. In December 2024, the city council approved the city's support for the HAMK campus project with 7,5 million euros.
As the project progresses, RTOY and HAMK have been negotiating the purchase of the Travel Center's Liikerada and tower from LocalTapiola. The parties intend to complete the transaction by 31 March 2025. If the transaction is completed, the low-lying part, known as Liikerada, which will be renovated and expanded, will house the university's new campus. The tower part of the Travel Center will also house, among other things, city staff facilities.
Press release October 11, 2024: The city will centralize its services at the Travel Center.
