On Monday, March 25, Riihimäki's city council approved the city's financial statements for 2023 and returned the proposal regarding the service network of schools and kindergartens for re-preparation.

City manager Jouni Eho suggested to the government, that the city will not build the Eastern School and the daycare center and would give up the Peltosaari school in 2026. The proposal also included giving up the Lasitehtaa school and evaluating and possible giving up the use of the main building of the Junailijanjakatu daycare center.

The mayor justified his proposal with the significant increase in the costs of the Itäinen school and kindergarten, the decrease in the number of children and the stable economy program launched by the city council.

The city council unanimously returned the service network section to re-preparation. According to the city council's decision, during the re-preparation, the comparability of financial figures must be ensured, among other things.

A surplus of 11,1 million euros

The city council approved the city's 2023 financial statements, which is 11,1 million euros surplus. The water supply company's share of the surplus is EUR 1,0 million. The good result was due to better realized tax revenues than anticipated in the budget, EUR 1,9 million.

The cash flows of the city's economy changed significantly in 2023. The biggest change was caused by the responsibility for organizing social and health services and rescue operations being transferred from the city to the welfare area. As a result of the change, the industry's expenses and income were removed from the financial statements (net approx. EUR 111 million).

Tax revenues increased by 1,9 million euros compared to the budget and were 76,7 million euros. The state contributions, 14,1/million euros, fell short of the amended budget by 0,3 million euros. The annual profit was 22,8 million euros, or 800 euros per inhabitant.

The city's loan portfolio was 2023 million euros at the end of 69,2. The loan portfolio increased by 11,7 million euros from the previous year. At the end of 2023, the city had a loan of 2 euros per inhabitant.

The city council will consider the financial statement either at the meeting held on May 6 or June 10.
