The City Board will consider updating the city strategy at its last meeting of the spring term on June 15, 2026. The city strategy is a significant policy, as it guides the city's most important decision-making, planning and development.

The new name, vision and some emphases of the updated city strategy proposal are new. The values – fairness, speed and courage – remain unchanged. The new proposed name is Next Riihimäki Strategy. The name of the current city strategy is RakasRiksu2035 Strategy.

Vision shortens

The vision of the new strategy proposed to the City Council has been updated to be more concise: "Next is Riihimäki, a great little town. We combine sustainable growth and a first-class quality of life. We change the world – without forgetting the fun."

The current strategy's vision is: "Riihimäki is the most beautiful and courageous community in the solar system, with happy residents and excellent companies. A great little town is home to meaningful everyday life, culture and future expertise. We combine sustainable growth and a first-class quality of life. We change the world – without forgetting about fun."

Familiar goals

The content of the city strategy has been updated based on the city's strengths. The strategy is divided into three familiar goals:

an irresistible quarter-hour city,
home of future creators,
a community of sustainable growth.

What is new for the city of Vartti are the additions to develop the vitality of the city center and the station area, as well as the glass city identity.

What is new for future makers is the mention of Riihimäki as a center of defense technology expertise.

Most of the changes are in the sustainable growth community. The environmental perspective has been raised above the economic perspective. The update has placed more emphasis on sustainable development, responsibility and biodiversity than before. New issues include supporting the introduction of renewable energy, regional economic policy and the development of democratic and participatory decision-making.

The full proposal for the updated city strategy can be viewed in the appendix to the agenda. The city council will decide on the city strategy in the autumn. The new updated strategy will be accompanied by a more detailed Next Riihimäki implementation program.

Light update

The city strategy has been lightly updated this time. The new city council and city government have generally been satisfied with the choices made in the current strategy during the previous council term.

The update work has involved, among others, members of the city council, city staff and city residents. The update work also utilized a resident survey conducted in the fall of 2025.

The City Council will meet again after the summer break on August 10th.
