The city government approved the stable economy program and did not change the decision to sell the Haapahuhta school
In its meeting on May 20, 2024, the Riihimäki city council decided that the city aims to save 4,2 million euros for the planning period 2025–2027 as part of economic stabilization. Of the savings in operating expenses, 2,2 million euros will be allocated to the year 2025 and 2,0 million to the years 2026–2027.
According to the decision, the city will phase and prioritize investments in order to curb the amount of debt. In addition, the city prepares to cooperate with the economic company Riihimäki Tilat ja Kehitys Oy (RTOY) and to utilize the funded funds in the implementation of top projects.
The decision was made by a majority of one vote
The board's decision came after a vote of 6–5. According to the proposal that lost in the vote, the savings of the economic program would have been half of what the mayor proposed in the planning period 2025–2027. According to the amendment proposed by Petri Mattila (sd.), the adjustment of 2,1 million would have been evenly distributed over three years.
Erja Hirviniemi (left), Minna Belik (left), Lauri Jormanainen (right) and Niina Bitter (right) voted for Mattila's presentation. In support of the mayor's presentation were Riku Bitter (council), Eija Aittola (council), Riitta Takala (council), Kari Suomalainen (const.), Anu Salo (const.) and Hannele Saari (const.).
The saving target of 4,2 million euros for operating expenses guides the preparation of the budget and plan of the departments and boards. The stable economy program does not include layoffs or furloughs. The financial program will be reported to the council.
The highest offer is no longer valid
The city government previously used its right of withdrawal for the technical board's decision regarding the sale of the Haapahuhta school with its residential buildings and areas to be handed over. The board upheld the board's decision, as the offer of the highest bidder was no longer valid under the original conditions. At the same time, the board asks the technical industry to investigate the use of the Real Estate Agent in sales. The highest offer was 9 euros.
In addition to the stable economy program and the sale of the Haapahuhta school, the city government discussed, among other things, the 2023 environmental report at its meeting. The board marked the report for information.
