At its meeting on Monday, December 2, 2024, the Riihimäki city council approved, among other things, the needs assessments for the old town hall and the facilities for special education in basic education. At the same time, the city government gave the technical branch the task of starting the planning of both projects.

In addition, the government proposes to the city council that the city supports the campus project of Häme University of Applied Sciences with 7,5 million euros, adds a relevant euro reservation to the financial plan and states that a more detailed contract will be drawn up for the project, which will safeguard the city's interests. The contract is approved by the city government.

Cost estimate for another option as well

In accordance with the city government's decision, the facilities for special education in basic education will be located in the future in connection with Uramo's school and kindergarten. According to the original proposal, the premises would be placed in the one-story extension part to be built for Uramo.

The government requires that the technical industry prepare another alternative with cost estimates in connection with project planning. In this option, the facilities for special education would generally be placed inside the walls of the current Uramo school and kindergarten instead of an extension.

Pupils receiving teaching with demanding special support, who have limitations caused by illness, functional ability or learning ability, will be placed in the new facilities. According to the needs assessment, the need for space is for two classrooms with a maximum of six students. In addition, there is a need for one space for special education (for a maximum of eight students), which can be used flexibly for different purposes.

Employment area for the old town hall

In the future, the old town hall is to be used as the Riihimäki office of the Etelä-Häme employment area. In the needs assessment, the construction of premises for the use of the employment area was found to be possible with light space changes and surface renovation.

The building has been unused since 2016. The operation of the employment area would move to the old town hall in 2027, when the building has been expanded with an elevator section and barrier-free entrance.

In connection with the reform of employment and economic services (TE24), a need arose for premises where the functions of the newly established Etelä-Häme employment area would be located. Work and economic services will be transferred from the state to the municipalities on January 1, 2025. The city of Riihimäki acts as the responsible municipality to the employment area of Etelä Häme i.e. for the employment services of Riihimäki, Lope, Hausjärvi and Janakkala.

The premises for the University of Applied Sciences are in Liikerata

The new campus of Häme University of Applied Sciences would be located in Matkakeskus during the years 2026 and 2027. The functions of the university of applied sciences would be located in the low-lying part of Matkakeskus, which is to be renovated and expanded, the so-called Liikerata.

The city, HAMK and Hyria education have been preparing the campus project from 2023. Last fall, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding on the matter. When HAMK's operations move to Matkakeskus, Hyria would move part of its operations to the property vacated by the university of applied sciences.

The city council will discuss the support granted to the university of applied sciences at its next meeting on Monday, December 9, 2024. The council meeting can be followed on the city's YouTube channel or on site at Uramo school (Uramontie 63).
