Wreath-laying event on the Memorial Day of the Fallen in Riihimäki on Sunday, May 19

A traditional honor visit will be held at the Riihimäki hero's grave on Memorial Day on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 12 o'clock. The event is organized in cooperation by the city of Riihimäki, the parish of Riihimäki and the Hattula-Riihimäki garrison, as well as local veteran and national defense organizations. The event is open to all city residents. Participants can wear badges if they wish.

The program of the event includes choral music, laying of wreaths, speeches and singing together. Choral music is performed by Chamber Choir Gaudete! led by Kari Julén. The speech will be given by lieutenant colonel Marko Uotinen. Uotinen is the director of the Center for Electronic Warfare from the Armored Brigade.

Memorial Day for the Fallen is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of May in honor of those who lost their lives in all Finnish wars and peacekeeping missions. Remembrance Day traditions include an honorary visit to the hero's grave.

Commemoration Day for the Fallen has been celebrated since 1940 according to the daily order given by Marshal Mannerheim. At first, the order only applied to the defense forces, but since then the day has expanded to be universal. Memorial Day has been an established flag day since 1977.
