Sand removal from the streets has started and the work will continue until the end of May

The removal of winter sand from the streets of Riihimäki has started. It takes about six weeks to remove the sand, so it will be ready by the end of May.

The city of Riihimäki started sand removal on the Easter weekend. The work was stopped when the frosts and snows came, but it continues again with the help of spring.

Sand removal and street washing have started from the city center and from the main roads and light traffic roads leading to the city center that are maintained by the city.

Brushing of city districts and residential streets proceeds according to the regional order that changes every year. You can see the order area map (pdf). There are about 400 kilometers of streets to be cleaned in Riihimäki. Street areas are cleaned with the power of about 20 work machines.

Dusting is prevented by watering the road surface

Street dust that increases in spring causes respiratory and eye symptoms. Street sanding can temporarily increase the amount of street dust that is already flying on the streets. In connection with sand removal, the road surface is watered and thus the aim is to prevent the streets from becoming dusty.

The aim is to remove sand within the limits set by the weather and the equipment in such a way that it causes as little harm as possible to individual citizens and road users.

When moving by car, on foot and by bicycle, please pay attention to slow-moving machinery. For example, a walker or cyclist should slow down when approaching a work machine and make sure that the machine driver notices them. In this way, passing the machine is safe.
