Sand removal from the streets begins

The removal of winter sand from the streets of Riihimäki has begun. The aim is to start the sand sweeping in the week beginning Monday, March 16, 2026. The work will begin in the city center and on main roads and light traffic routes leading to the city center that are maintained by the city.

The entire sand removal project, including street cleaning in the city center, is estimated to be completed by the beginning of May. The progress and schedule of the work will be significantly affected by temperatures: night frosts and the speed of snow melting.

It is still worth being vigilant on walking and cycling paths, as there is snowmelt on the paths, which freezes during night frosts.

In the first phase, the work will focus on so-called rough sand removal from already melted roads. As the melting of the roads, pedestrian and cycle paths progresses, more equipment will be added to brush and wash the sanding materials. At the same time, the work area will expand to cover the entire city.
