The relocation of the Riihimäki campus of Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) to a location next to the train station and connected to the Travel Centre is proceeding as planned. The new campus will affect both HAMK's operations and the development of the entire Riihimäki station area.

HAMK purchased the premises of the Travel Center Liikerada in the summer of 2025, where multifunctional and modern learning environments will be built. The city plan amendment is currently pending, and it is expected to become legally binding in the fall of 2026.

“Currently, our plan is to use 2026 to design and prepare for construction of the new facilities, and the actual implementation phase will be in 2027. According to the targets, the new facilities will be available in early 2028,” estimates Tuomas Salonen, Director of Property Development at HAMK.

The campus design emphasizes comfort, community and modern learning environments that support both the growing number of students and research, development and innovation activities. The campus offers courses in mechanical engineering, transport, information and communication technology and future transport systems, among others. HAMK aims to increase its student population in Riihimäki to 2000 students. In addition, the campus is home to the HAMK Tech research unit.

Location brings accessibility and synergy

The new campus is located right next to Riihimäki railway station, making it easily accessible by train, bus and light traffic. The location enables closer cooperation with local businesses and other actors and supports the strategic goals of the city of Riihimäki in developing the station area.

The campus's move to the Travel Center will bring students and university activities to the heart of the city, which will revitalize the station area and support broader development. At the same time, HAMK's current facilities will be transferred to Hyria.

A joint effort between the city and HAMK

The City of Riihimäki is supporting the campus project with 7,5 million euros. Mayor Jouni Eho emphasizes the importance of HAMK to the city and the development of the station area:

"The role of Häme University of Applied Sciences in the city of Riihimäki is absolutely central. HAMK is one of our strategic partners, and with the new campus project, HAMK's importance and role in the city will be further emphasized. When HAMK comes to the station area with two thousand engineering students, it will also have a positive impact on the progress of other development projects, such as the Power Plant and the Locomotive Garages."

Both HAMK and the city of Riihimäki benefit from investments in growth and development.

"We can already see the impact of HAMK on the city's attractiveness - new international engineering programs have increased interest, and in the future, HAMK's growth will grow the entire city. We truly want to be a university city, and HAMK's growth means that Riihimäki will grow," says Eho.
