The city of Riihimäki started renovating Hämeenaukio a year ago. Last fall, the road renewal works were completed. The work on the square section of Hämeenaukio will start on Wednesday, April 24. The work will cause a small traffic and noise nuisance in the area around the square until its completion, i.e. until the end of the summer.

"In the central part of the square, massive paving works are ahead. The square will be paved with concrete paving that imitates natural stone slabs. The hexagonal tiles weigh 31 kilograms each," says Arto Rämäkkö, the city's responsible developer.

Paving work will also continue on the light traffic lanes of the streets surrounding the square.

Sculpture as an eye-catcher in the square

When Hämeenaukio is completed, its central element will be the stone sculpture of sculptor Aaron Heino. The goal is for the large sculpture to be brought to its place in the northern part of the square in June. The sculpture is illuminated with spotlights embedded in the ground.

The entire square will be completed at the end of the summer. The opening of the square and the unveiling of the work will be announced closer to the date.

Elm trees in the middle of the square

The square is bordered by vegetated areas, which are mainly planted with low perennial vegetation so that the views of the square remain open. Between the parking area located on the western edge of the square and the actual square, more covering vegetation will be planted to provide visibility in the direction of the parking area.

A row of narrow-growing elms is planted in the middle of the square. The trees are planted in a so-called load-bearing growth medium, which is equipped with air conditioning and irrigation pipes, so that the trees would thrive in the middle of the paving.

The goal is a safe and comfortable urban space

The aim of the reform has been to clarify Hämeenaukio's traffic arrangements, improve traffic safety and conditions for walking and cycling. Movement in the square will be made accessible.

The goal of renewing the square is also to create a comfortable and functional urban space that enables a variety of different activities in the area.

Paving works for the light traffic lane will also begin on Länsitie

Also in the western part of Riihimäki on Länsitie, the paving and asphalting works of the light traffic route between Upokkantie and Puhaltajankatu, which will last for about a month, will begin during May Day week. Resurfacing will cause minor traffic inconvenience for users of the light traffic route.
