Background of the competition

The city of Riihimäki plans to organize housing fair in the summer of 2027 together with the Finnish Housing Fair. The goal of the city and the fair organization is to sign a cooperation agreement in June 2024 at the latest, which will agree on the cooperation, costs, responsibilities and obligations of the fair project.

The new area is located about three kilometers northeast of Riihimäki railway station. The area belongs to the Koko district, where a town plan bearing the name Kokonmäki is being prepared. Kokko refers to the farm separated from the Kara manor in 1788.

The new residential area is bordered in the east by the residential area of ​​Metsäkorvi and the municipal boundary of Hausjärvi. In the west and southwest, the area is bordered by the scattered small-house settlement of Koko. The area is currently undeveloped and mostly forested. A large part of the area is birch and pine forest. The area is characterized by steeply sloping terrain in some places. In addition, there are several important bog prints in the area.

In the vicinity of the new residential area is the garrison's fitness track/ski track and the Hatlamminsuo nature trail with pine trees. Hatlamminsuo is Riihimäki's single most valuable natural site.

The nomenclature committee gets to know all the proposals of the name competition and gives their own recommendation to the selection board, which includes city manager Jouni Eho, vitality director Mika Herpiö, project manager Riikka Uusikulku, planning manager Niina Matkala, communication and marketing manager Mia Miettinen and chairman of the nomenclature committee Sirkka Tuominen. The winners of the name competition will be announced in February 2024.
