The number of passenger cars registered in Riihimäki has declined for the first time since monitoring continued since 2000. The number of cars was 85 fewer in 2022 than in 2021. It is not possible to point to one significant factor for the decrease in cars. There are probably several reasons.

Riihimäki is a close-knit city, where 94 percent of the city's residents live within a three-kilometer radius of the train station. Because of this, business trips are short and daily life without a car is possible in Riihimäki.

The popularity of local transport is growing

The number of users of local transport has grown to record numbers and the R-kyuit of invitation-only transport has found customers very well. A record 2022 trips were made in local transport in 219. The last time the same amount was traveled was 000 years ago.

The possibility of renting city bikes and electric scooters can also be a factor in the decrease in the number of cars.

You can read more detailed information about the development of the number of cars and other environmentally relevant events in the 2022 environmental report of the city of Riihimäki. The report is available from the city's website.
