The city of Riihimäki starts preparing for the 2027 Housing Fair. The matter was confirmed on Monday, when the Riihimäki city council approved the booking agreement with Suomen Asuntomessu for the organization of the Asuntomessu.
The housing fair is divided into two different residential areas in Riihimäki, Jokikylä and Kokonmäki. The regions are strikingly different in nature. Urbaani Jokikylä is located next to the Riihimäki railway station, and Kokonmäki, close to nature, is located in the northeast part of Riihimäki, about three kilometers from the railway station.
The Jokikylä area gets its distinctiveness from the Vantaan River and the Jokipuisto that is built around its riverbed. The realization of Jokikylä's residential blocks is accelerated by architectural competitions. Jokikylä is part of Asemanpuisto and the Riihimäki station area, where we are implementing housing at best for approx.
5 for new residents. The area of Jokikylä allows for diverse living, from apartment buildings to smaller-scale construction such as townhouses and townhouses.
The old power plant building Voimala, located north of Jokikylä, is to be renovated into a nationally attractive event and cultural center.
The Kokonmäki area is gradually becoming a new small house area close to nature. Adjacent to the area is the Hatlamminsuo nature reserve with its pine trees and ski lodges. Hatlamminsuo is Riihimäki's single most valuable natural site. In Kokonmäki, preparations are being made for the construction of a kindergarten.
The goal is to organize a new housing fair that is easy to visit by public transport.
- I am very happy about the opportunity to bring living in Riihimäki to national attention. We have urban and natural residential areas to offer within a very short distance from the Riihimäki train station and the employment centers of Southern Finland. We want to develop Riihimäki's reputation as an affordable, easy-to-commute and culturally rich city. It's easy to get to Riihimäki and the fairgrounds by train from anywhere in Finland, says city manager Jouni Eho.
Suomen Asuntomessu receives constant contacts and ideas from localities interested in organizing the fair. Riihimäki's fair application impressed the Housing Fair organization.
- Riihimäki's trade fair application made a great impression on us, as the background investigations had been done in a comprehensive and careful manner. We were impressed by the city's willingness to promote the attraction of Riihimäki and how alive, functional and culturally rich the small town Riihimäki is already. We believe that a successful and impressive Housing Fair can be realized in Riihimäki, says Anna Tapio, CEO of Suomen Asuntomessu.
Riihimäki starts preparing a housing fair with the theme Unresistable quarter city. 94 percent of Riihimäki's residents live within three kilometers of the train station. This means that schools, kindergartens and other services are a short distance away and are easily accessible on foot and by bike. All the most important services can be found no more than a quarter of a mile from the front door.
- The companies and educational institutions located in Riihimäki have already commendably shown their willingness to participate in the fair cooperation, says the city's vitality director Mika Herpiö.
The housing fair project is planned for 2023–2024, and construction is scheduled for 2025–2027.
The site plan for the residential area of Jokikylä and the park has entered into law in August 2023. The site plan for Kokonmäki is planned for consideration by the future city council in the second quarter of 2024.
The reservation agreement concluded now means that the Finnish Housing Fair will not negotiate with other cities about organizing the 2027 fair. The goal is to sign a cooperation agreement no later than June 2024, which will agree on the cooperation, costs, responsibilities and obligations of the fair project.
