Voting for the City of Riihimäki's participatory budgeting began on Monday, January 5, 2026, and the voting period will continue until January 31. A total of 55 proposals from city residents advanced to the voting stage, a few of which were combined, so that city residents now have 50 plans to vote on.

You can vote on the participation platform of the City of Riihimäki. (Osallistu.riihimaki.fi).

"A large proportion of the requests are for sports facilities, which shows the residents' strong interest in maintaining health through exercise and enjoying nature. This year, more proposals were made related to dogs and other animals than before," says Mira Ahjoniemi, Project Manager for Participatory Budgeting.

The residents can vote on which projects the 100 euros of participating budgeting should be distributed. You can vote for one or more items.

In 2025, the funds allocated for participatory budgeting were used to implement measures such as the control of the Spanish slug, children's events and the highly praised park meals for children and young people. The Riutta MTB Bike park, which was implemented based on a proposal from participatory budgeting, also received attention on Suomen Latu's list of Outdoor Activities of the Year 2025.

6th graders and older can vote

In participatory budgeting, all students enrolled in the 6th grade in the city of Riihimäki, as well as children, young people and adults living in Riihimäki, have the right to vote. The participation platform requires electronic login with bank credentials or a mobile certificate. This ensures that the voter is a resident of Riihimäki and that each person only votes once. Students at educational institutions in Riihimäki can use their MPASSid IDs. Guidance on using the participation platform is available from the library if necessary. Voting on the electronic participation platform requires information about the municipality of residence, so people with security restrictions cannot vote through the participation platform. People with security restrictions can identify themselves electronically and vote in the Information Center Tietotupa located in Matkakeskus.

Proposals that received at least 10 votes were allowed to continue

In the autumn, a total of 82 proposals were submitted by city residents for participatory budgeting, of which 27 were assessed as not being put to the vote. The rejected proposals did not comply with the rules of participatory budgeting or they exceeded the maximum budget or the proposal did not receive the support of 10 people required for the voting phase. In a few cases, there is a clear obstacle to implementation or the proposal is already being implemented in another way. The accepted proposals were also further refined in a joint open planning workshop with residents at Antonin talo (Antoni's house) in November.

100 000 euros will be used for participatory budgeting

In participatory budgeting, the people of Riihimäki influence how the public funds available to the city are used. Inclusion is one of the central themes of the strategy of the city of Riihimäki. One million euros has been set aside for participatory budgeting in the fall of 2019, of which 100 000 euros will be used annually.

The results of the participatory budgeting vote, i.e. the items to be implemented this year, will be published at the beginning of February.
