The voting for the participatory budgeting of the city of Riihimäki has started on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. A total of 43 proposals from the residents of Riihimäki advanced to the voting stage. A few of the proposals that came in were combined, so that the residents now have 40 plans to vote on.
Voting takes place on the participation platform osallistu.riihimaki.fi. You can vote until January 31.
"The citizens made a little more proposals about services for children, young people and families than in previous years. As in previous years, many wishes were about parks and sports facilities. There were also several proposals related to the city's lighting," says Mira Ahjoniemi, project manager of participatory budgeting.
The residents can vote on which projects the 100 euros of participating budgeting should be distributed. You can vote for one or more items.
In 2024, participative budgeting funds were used to implement, among other things, the Etanapassi campaign to combat the Spanish Slug, a series of park concerts, an anti-bullying campaign and the project of supporting mental well-being. The new shelter and suit shelter of the Paalijärvi swimming beach, which was implemented from the proposal of participatory budgeting, were completed in the fall and are an excellent addition to the conditions for outdoor recreation, camping and exercise.
In participatory budgeting, all 6th grade students enrolled in the city of Riihimäki and older children, youth and adults have the right to vote. The participation platform requires electronic login with bank credentials or a mobile certificate. This ensures that the voter is from Riihmäki and everyone votes only once. Pupils of schools in Riihimäki can use their MPASSid IDs. Guidance on using the participation platform can be obtained from the library if necessary.
In the fall, a total of 71 proposals were received from residents for participatory budgeting, of which, in the evaluation, 28 were found not to be put to the vote. Rejected proposals did not meet the rules of participatory budgeting or they exceeded the maximum budget or the proposal did not receive the support of 10 people required for the voting stage. In a few cases, there is a clear obstacle to implementation or the proposal is already being implemented in another way.
In participatory budgeting, the people of Riihimäki influence how the public funds available to the city are used. Inclusion is one of the central themes of the strategy of the city of Riihimäki. One million euros has been set aside for participatory budgeting in the fall of 2019, of which 100 000 euros will be used annually.
The results of the participatory budgeting vote, i.e. the items to be implemented this year, will be published at the beginning of February.
