Riihimäki's 65th anniversary will be celebrated on September 11th

The birthday of the city of Riihimäki is traditionally celebrated on Riihimäki Day on Thursday, September 11, 2025. This year, our city turns 65, as Riihimäki received city rights in 1960. The city's birthday has traditionally been celebrated every year on Riihimäki Day.

The birthday will be celebrated with a concert by the Riihimäki Chamber Orchestra

The Riihimäki Chamber Orchestra invites the city's residents to celebrate their birthday at the Old Market Square. The chamber orchestra offers a warm musical moment dedicated to all the people of Riihimäki. So come and enjoy the magic of classical music in the middle of the city when the Riihimäki Chamber Orchestra performs at the Old Market Square starting at 18 pm. Under the direction of Eero Lepola, the Riihimäki Chamber Orchestra will perform Sibelius, among other works, but the concert will also feature tunes from the Beatles and James Bond. The concert will be opened and the city's birthday greetings will be delivered by Mayor Jouni Eho. Riihimäki balloons will be given out to the first 150 people.

The concert is subject to weather conditions, so in the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the hall of the Finnish Glass Museum.

The Folk Saimaa band will be performing at the birthday party.

As the final culmination of our city's birthday celebrations, the award-winning and acclaimed Folk Saimaa will take to the stage at Granit Square on Friday, September 12th at 19 pm. The band is known for its strong stage charisma and distinctive sound that captivates listeners.

"This year we are celebrating our hometown through music. It is a great honor to have both the Riihimäki Chamber Orchestra and Folk Saimaa perform right now, when our city is celebrating its 65th anniversary," says cultural producer Minttu Seppo about the Riihimäki Day program.

Author Veijo Meri will receive an author's plaque in the Riihimäki Library courtyard at an event starting at 16.30:17.00 p.m. The library will also have a book recommendation from XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. on works by authors from Riihimäki participating in the Olé Riihimäki reading challenge, as well as a clearance sale of materials throughout the day.

A tour of the railway station and the Story of Riihimäki tour reveal local history

You can learn about the colorful stages of the railway station with a presentation put together by the Riihimäki Society. The presentation of the railway station starts on the steps of the train station at 15.00:16.30 PM. You can learn about the local history of Riihimäki and the stories of the city on the Riihimäki Story tour starting at 16.30:XNUMX PM. The free bus tour leaves from the Travel Center at XNUMX:XNUMX PM and lasts about an hour. The last stop of the tour is the Old Market Square. The tour guide is Juho Haavisto.

On Riihimäki Day, admission to the Finnish Glass Museum, Riemu Museums, Finnish Hunting Museum and the Workers' House Museum is also free. Local transport, i.e. R-transport, including R-kiyti, is also free all day. Admission to the Riihimäki swimming pool is free on Riihimäki Day from 18 pm to 20 pm. Riksula's 4th birthday will also be celebrated from 12 pm to 15 pm at Anton's house.

The City of Riihimäki is seeking candidates for the Cultural Deed of the Year 2025 award. The purpose of the Cultural Deed of the Year award is to recognize distinguished cultural actors and cultural deeds of the year in Riihimäki, as well as to make local creative expertise visible.
