Basic art education for adults

This study unit is intended for you who

  • you are interested in starting versatile basic art education studies in fine arts or crafts
  • you have previously dabbled in fine arts or crafts, but would like to deepen your knowledge and skills
  • you need new ideas and skills for your own work
  • you are later applying for further education in the field.

The basic art education studies for adults are divided into periods and are taught by teachers from different fields. Our teachers are skilled art and craft professionals with years of teaching experience. The studies, which are completed over three years, include getting to know different techniques and materials. One group studies together for three years and after they graduate, a new group starts. The group started in the fall of 2024. Applicants are expected to commit to regular three-year studies.

Basic art education for adults follows national curriculum principles. The goal is to give students the skills to understand and interpret visual phenomena in the environment and in different cultures, and to apply what they have learned in different areas of life. The teaching also gives you the skills to apply for postgraduate studies in different fields of culture. Studies in the broad curriculum of art offer exciting and versatile opportunities for making and experiencing art and crafts. In order to get a certificate of completion, the student must successfully complete 500 lessons.

Tuition fee 2025–2026

€215/semester

The tuition fee covers tuition. Material costs are added to the tuition fees for adults, depending on the materials used. It is not possible to get discounts for basic art education for adults.

You register for the art school once and the student automatically retains their student place. However, if you wish, the student can withdraw from the school and the withdrawal must be made in writing, for example by email to the art school office taidekoulu@riihimaki.fi. Notification to the teacher is not enough! If the cancellation is made before the semester is invoicing, the participant will only be billed for the lessons arranged before the cancellation. If the cancellation is made after invoicing, the course fees will not be refunded.

Tuition fees will be charged if the student has not notified the suspension.

A student with unpaid fees from the previous semester cannot start a new semester without a separate agreement. Collection costs and interest on late payment will be invoiced for subsequent collection.

Visual Arts / Adults academic year 2025-2026

The three-year journey into the world of art and creativity continues. The themes of the second year are environmental and media art and traditional and digital life drawing. In the fall, environmental and media art: sound, space, photography, image processing. The basic studies in adult art are a three-year study program. The studies began in the fall of 2024 and no new students are being accepted. The next group will start in the fall of 2027. During the studies, you will become familiar with various image-making techniques and materials, and deepen your own expression and relationship with art. The studies emphasize a conversational, experimental and exploratory way of working, where mistakes and surprises are part of the creative learning and problem-solving process. The academic years are structured into separate teaching periods in the fall and spring terms, which may include shorter separate periods on certain techniques. The studies consist of joint studies and independent work.
Additional information
Basic art education for adults is in accordance with the general curriculum and is based on the curriculum. The studies are suitable for both beginners and those who are already involved. During the studies, you will deepen your own relationship with art and create a foundation for individual and creative expression. The studies can also be used as a bridge to professional studies.

The second year autumn studies will cover media, environmental and spatial art, as well as photography and image processing. In the spring we will study human depiction and plans include drawing a living model both traditionally and digitally.

In the final year, students will study ceramics, papier-mâché and concrete design in the autumn, and in the spring, they will study textile art sculptures and recycling in art. In the spring of the third year, a joint exhibition will also be held, in the design and construction of which the students will be involved.

COMMON STUDIES are usually held on Friday or Thursday evenings.

The study includes approximately one hour of INDEPENDENT WORK per week and there are weekend meetings a few times during the semester. The study package also includes participation in events and possible collaboration with other parties.

Crafts / Adults academic year 2025-2026

The second year of the three-year handicraft journey will start in autumn 2025. In the studies, you will strengthen your handicraft skills, get to know new materials and discover your own creativity! The academic years are built up of several different teaching periods in the autumn and spring semesters. The studies consist of joint studies and independent work. In the second year of study, there is fabric patterning and environmental art in the autumn. In the spring, for example, jewelry, accessories, materials such as wood and recycled materials. We weave a carpet on looms and make a pirtanauha. The studies offer an opportunity for goal-oriented and long-term study of handicrafts under the guidance of experts in various fields. The task of the handicraft curriculum is to strengthen the student's handicraft and design skills, develop the student's expressive capabilities and mastery of different materials and techniques. The studies consist of the following areas; me as a craftsman, crafts in different cultures past and present, the relationship between arts and crafts, clothing and the environment, plastic composition, as a creator in the field of crafts and art. The goal is to inspire the student to insights, imagination and the joy of making, which create the foundation for creative crafts that develop multi-material competence and expression. The studies practice and deepen the student's craft skills in ideation, goal-oriented planning, design and implementation. These are used to create solutions, products, works and services to the challenges of the living environment. The studies emphasize ecological solutions and materials based on the principles of sustainable development.

The study package also includes participation in events and possible collaboration with other parties. The second year of study includes fabric design, environmental art and weaving. In the final year, ceramics, papier-mâché and concrete design are studied and a joint exhibition is built. The local teacher will provide more detailed information about adult manual skills studies.
