Teaching

Riihimäki Art School provides basic art education that progresses from level to level according to a broad curriculum for children and young people aged 5–18, as well as adults. The art school has a visual arts program for children and young people, and visual arts and crafts programs for adults.

The task of basic art education is to create a foundation for emotional, aesthetic and ethical growth. It develops and preserves national culture, and supports the student's ability to appreciate different cultures and act in a multicultural society.

  • All information about the art school, including the cancellation of a lesson due to a teacher's illness, is sent to the students' guardians by text message or email. That's why, in addition to the student's contact information, we need the guardian's mobile phone number and email address, so that all information will always be received. It is also important for safety reasons that the contact information of the students' guardians is always up to date.

You must attend classes as regularly as possible. Absences are expected to be reported to the teacher. Students are expected to arrive at and leave classes punctually. Exceptions can be negotiated with the teacher. It would be desirable for the teacher to be notified from home if the child needs to leave class earlier. The students are the teacher's responsibility during the lessons.

NOTE! The youngest students of the art school must be accompanied to class by an adult. If your child (under 8 years old) is allowed to go to lessons alone, we ask for written permission from the teacher.

  • You should come to classes in clothes that are suitable for work, i.e. clothes that won't be affected by small or slightly larger paint stains. Learning is much more comfortable when you don't have to be careful and afraid of ruining your clothes. Indoor shoes or slippers may also be necessary, especially in the work spaces on the ground floor.

You can take a small healthy snack to the lessons, e.g. juice or fruit, but preferably no candy, chips, etc. The snack balances the students' different working rhythm.

The hope is that students would not use cell phones in class except in situations intended for learning.

  • The aim of the teaching is to develop skills and knowledge that the student needs in different areas of life and that give him the skills to, for example, apply for postgraduate studies later on. Its purpose is also to open up new opportunities for students to understand art and culture and to develop students' thinking skills and creativity. The goal is also to guide the student to focused, purposeful and long-term work, as well as to constructive activities as an individual and as a member of a group.

  • Riihimäki Art School bases its studies on sustainable art and craft traditions and develops the individuality of both the school and its students through that. We value the creative ingenuity of the individual. We invest in recycling, which is reflected in our work methods and the materials used.

The basic teaching of visual arts in fine arts and crafts is based on the law (633/1998) and the decree (813/1998) on basic art education.

Riihimäki Art School is a member of the Finnish Association of Fine Arts Schools.
