Music design subjects are part of each of our students' annual studies, alongside playing and singing lessons and joint music making. Studying takes place in groups and the length of the weekly class varies according to the level of study. You can study music composition subjects at our music college from both a classical and pop/jazz basis. For the youngest, there are Taituri groups, which pave the way to the wonders of music and music college studies alongside playing lessons.
If you have completed music performance subjects elsewhere than at Riihimäki Music College, please contact the music college office at the e-mail address musikkiopisto@riihimaki.fi to check the utilization of your studies.
The Riihimäki music college has Taituri groups for students aged 6–8 who are starting their music studies. The lessons include practicing rhythmicity, singing and understanding music by moving, singing and playing. The activities of the Taituri group support musical studies and bring players of different instruments together. You do not need to bring your own instrument to the lessons.

Continuing with basic level 2 on tuning and music analysis. The learning content is the same as in the group starting with basic level 2, plus harmony listening and chord analysis. The course ends with the standard completion of basic studies. The weekly class is 60 minutes long.
The group covers tuning and music analysis from basic level 3 onwards. The course includes rhythms, melodies, intervals, chords, cadences, chord analysis. The course ends with a passing grade. The weekly lesson is 90 minutes long.

In the basic studies of the history of music, the history and stylistic periods of Western art music are introduced, starting with the baroque and continuing through classicism and romanticism to the stylistic trends of the 1900th century. The basic studies course includes the history of Finnish music. The course also includes instrument learning: we get to know orchestral instruments and learn to recognize instruments by ear.
More study material for basic music history studies from here. The content was prepared by Sakari Hildén, the former principal of the music school, and the material has been widely used in music schools across Finland. The material is currently a reading version.
The in-depth course in the history of music introduces the history and stylistic periods of Western art music, starting with early music, around 800 BC. This 1200-year period comprises the ancient period. This is followed in the history of music by the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism and Realism, and finally the modern period that began in 1910.
