The city's weaving has started as an activity of the Riihimäki household board. In the history books of the Household Board, there is a mention of renting looms for home use since 1955. In October 1956, the household council got the premises from the fire station, where the townspeople could weave every day, as long as it did not hinder other activities (other courses and lectures).
In 1965, the textile got separate premises at Välittäjä 7, when five looms and one loom were in use. In 1975, the loom moved to Peltosaari, Otavankatu 1 shelter. At that time, there were nine looms, one loom and all the tools needed for fabric weaving. The need for weaving advice grew and more space was needed.
The former food laboratory opposite the bus station was renovated into weaving premises, where the textile mill opened its doors in December 1986. The textile mill has been operating in these same premises for more than 30 years. In 1989, the household board was abolished and the textile mill came under the control of the adult education center, then it started operating under the name Kaupungin kutomo.
